Heliodorus of Emesa, Ancient Greek prose. 2nd or 3rd cent. CE

Translation (as The Ethiopics; or, Adventures of Theagenes and Chariclea)

by Rowland Smith

Translated into English prose.

Smith notes in his Preface to the 1855 edition that his work is based on an earlier translation of poor quality dated 1791. The authorship is not given.

Daphnis and Chloe (Δάφνις καὶ Χλόη)

Longus, Ancient Greek prose. 2nd cent. CE

Translation (as The Amours of Daphnis and Chloe)

by C. V. Le Grice and Rowland Smith

In Preface to 1855 edition, Smith indicates that the Grice translation of 1803 (which he knew as an anonymous work) is the basis of his own. He includes translations of the passages omitted by Grice and of the Courier fragment.
